Climate Change Training

Carbon Literacy certification and specialist climate training for local authorities

Climate action requires staff and elected members across the organisation to understand both the urgency of the challenge and their specific role in delivering solutions. Generic climate awareness is not enough - different roles require different knowledge, and different political contexts require different approaches to communication.

I provide Carbon Literacy certification and bespoke climate training for local authorities and public sector organisations, with a particular focus on helping participants understand how climate action intersects with their specific responsibilities - whether these are planning decisions, procurement choices, community engagement, or political leadership.

What I offer:

Carbon Literacy Certification.  Accredited courses leading to Carbon Literacy certification through the Carbon Literacy Project, which can be run over a full day, two half-days, or three evening sessions.  Suitable for elected members, senior officers, and frontline staff. Can be delivered in-person or online, and tailored to the specific context of your authority - whether urban or rural, unitary or two-tier, no overall control, or single-party controlled, with a real focus on speaking directly to political values.

Climate Communications. Understanding diverse community attitudes to climate policy and how to communicate effectively with politically and socially diverse audiences. Based on research in political psychology and values-based communication. Particularly valuable for authorities in politically diverse areas, or where community opposition to climate infrastructure has emerged.

Planning & Climate. Navigating the planning system for net zero development, including how to make effective use of planning policy, how to evaluate climate impacts in planning decisions, and how to develop Neighbourhood Development Plans with climate at their core.

Procurement & Supply Chain. Embedding climate considerations in procurement decisions without falling foul of regulations. Understanding Scope 3 emissions, supply chain engagement, and how to use procurement strategically for climate goals.

Investment Risk from Climate Change. Helping finance teams, pension committees and treasury functions understand physical and transition risks to local authority assets, services, and investments. Particularly relevant for pension fund oversight committees.

Councils I've worked with:

I have delivered Carbon Literacy training and specialist workshops for Bristol City Council, Sheffield City Council, Liverpool City Council, Somerset County Council, North Somerset Council, Bath & North East Somerset Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Hull City Council, Blackpool Borough Council, Wealden District Council, Walsall Borough Council, Ribble Valley Borough Council, London Boroughs of Redbridge, Ealing, and Greenwich, Cotswold District Council, Forest of Dean District Council, West Oxfordshire District Council, Horsham District Council, and Rother District Council.

What participants say:

"I found the clear style and competence of the presentations very convincing"

"Having attended the Carbon Literacy course with a number of other cabinet members and elected members, I am confident that it has stuck with them. Colleagues are more eloquent and more committed than ever to local action and also asking more of central government. As an individual, myself and others have renewed energy to talk about the change that is needed, and embed it to our home lives and professional lives. I am delighted that I pushed hard for a full day training, didn't compromise and ensured that we as a council took on this training."

"The trainer was excellent. A fantastic combination of knowledge about climate change and experience in council issues"

"I just wanted to thank you and congratulate you on the quality of the carbon literacy training package you delivered on Friday. I was quite immersed and while I am generally well informed and passionate on climate change, still learnt a considerable amount"

Who this is for:
