Local Authority Climate Emergency support

From organisational audits that will help you determine where one department or area of work is acting to undermine or slow efforts in another area, to support with strategy and action plan development and implementation, to designing and delivering community engagement and consultation on the ground, Climate Guide can help.

'Climate readiness' audits

Local government bodies, from the smallest to the largest, need to :

  • define how each department or division contributes to the problem of climate change, and how they can become part of the solution
  • understand what training existing staff will need, identify where they need to recruit new roles and specialisms, and embed a genuine understanding of the nature of the climate emergency and its solutions among the entire staff group
  • ensure that their Elected Members have a shared understanding of the nature of the Climate Emergency, and their role as leaders in the zero-carbon transformation
  • understand what evidence and data is needed, and how to commission and use that to prioritise investment and staff time

A Climate Readiness audit is essentially a gap analysis. It will help you understand your organisational shortcomings in relation to tackling the climate emergency,  identify opportunities to improve your response, and build or strengthen a cross-organisation commitment to achieving the sort of radical change that society needs.

Climate communication and resident segmentation

Climate communication is not done well by most councils, who tend to use a 'one-size-fits-nobody' approach. For genuine climate behavioural change across your community, you will need to :

  • understand how your community breaks down in terms of their attitudes to climate change, their ability to take action, and the impacts they are currently having on emissions
  • segment and target your climate communications across a range of themes and actions
  • understand the different impacts that different actions will have on your area's emissions, and avoid encouraging residents to focus on well-meaning but low-impact actions

Through training, data analysis and strategy development, Climate Guide can help you develop a comprehensive approach to supporting your residents to act on the climate crisis.

Local Plan Support

Development of a Local Plan that drives genuinely sustainable development is one of local government's biggest weapons. Understand how your plan can best be updated or improved with a Local Plan review from Climate Guide.
